Bail Granted to Attempted Rape and Murder Accused from Kakching, Victim’s Family Calls for Justice

KAKCHING, SEPT 19: Thokchom Sanju, alias Abungo, a 25-year-old man from Sugnu Chajing Khunou, Kakching district accused of attempting to rape and murder his neighbour has been granted bail after serving one year in jail. The alleged crime occurred during the peak of Manipur violence on July 24, 2023, around 9 PM, when Sanju reportedly broke into the victim’s house, attempting to molest her. When the victim resisted and tried to flee, the accused stabbed her 18 times on different parts of her body.

The victim, now physically disabled due to the attack, and her family were devastated upon learning that Sanju had been granted bail this past July. In a plea for justice, the victim’s family, supported by Thoubal District United Women Development Organisation, held a press conference at Manipur Press Club on Thursday.

During the Press meet, Khumukcham Ongbi Mema, Vice President of the Organisation, urged the public to reject any attempt to reintegrate the accused into the community. She emphasized the need for public support to secure justice for the victim and expressed deep concern over the victim’s current condition, calling for protection and justice for the family.
