CHANDEL: The District Administration, Chandel on Saturday Celebrated the 80th Independence Day of India at the Maha Union Government Higher Secondary School, Chandel with officials, awardees, public leaders attending.
The event began with the formation of Parade and the Superintendent of Police taking the salute. Then, chief guest of the day, Mamoni Doley, Deputy Commissioner of Chandel inspected the contingents after which she hoisted the Nation Flag. This was accompanied by the singing of the National Anthem and March past by the contingents.
Addressing the gathering, the chief guest recalled and remembered the freedom fighters, including Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Patel, Rani Gaidingliu, among others. She said the day was also an occasion for the public to reflect on their responsibilities as citizens.
“We come from different communities, cultures, religions and backgrounds but we share a common identity as Indians,” the DC said. She maintained, “here in our district, we understand the importance of peace, unity and mutual respect.”

“These are important not only for maintaining harmony among our communities but also for the development of our district,” the DC added.
The Deputy Commissioner also highlighted the various developmental works taken up in the district and the achievements ranging from education to health sector to forest and various fields. She said this was possible due to the dedication of government officials and the public.
The DC also said that Chandel recorded zero violence during the year and praised the district police for maintaining a peaceful law and order situation. She thanked the public, religious leaders, CSOs, student, youth and women organisations for their support in maintaining the law and order situation.
She reiterated that peace is important for development and appealed to all to continue to maintain a peaceful law and order situation.
The DC also stated that despite the various achievements, there are also challenges that require attention such as mobile connectivity, electricity and road conditions in peripheral areas, the DC said.

She also appealed to the public to support the Special Intensive Revision and Census to ensure accuracy.
As part of the celebration, a cultural dance was also performed while certificates were also awarded to achievers in various fields.
This year, no schools participated in the March Past and there were very few public participation or audiences. As informed by sources, this was due to the 24-hour total shutdown called by the United Naga Council (UNC).
