CHANDEL: The 24-hour emergency total shutdown called by the United Naga Council (UNC) in all Naga districts and Naga-dominated areas from 11:00 PM of 14 August to 11:00 PM of 15 August affected normal life in Chandel.
All shops, business establishments, offices, institutions and non-essential activities remained closed. The district headquarters bore a deserted look during the day.

The total shutdown called by the apex Naga body also affected the 80th Independence Day celebration organised by the District Administration, Chandel as no educational institutions turned up for the March Past this year. Compared to the previous years, even the public audience was minimal with just government officials, special invitees and awardees attending the celebration.
The shutdown was called in protest against the barbaric attack on Langka Naga village on Thursday by Kuki militants, wherein two innocent Naga Village Guards were brutally killed while leaving three others critically injured.

To express the collective grief and anger of the Naga people, the UNC had called for a 24-hour emergency total shutdown across all Naga areas from 11:00 PM of August 14.
However, essential services such as medical, water, electricity, and media are exempted.
The UNC had also appealed to all Naga people and general public in the state to extend full cooperation and observe the shutdown in a peaceful and democratic manner.
