KOHIMA: The premier thanksgiving festival of the Mao people, Chüthüni 2026, was celebrated with vibrant cultural fervour and a strong sense of community at Naga Solidarity Park, Kohima, under the theme “Treasuring Traditions, Celebrating Identity.”
The programme was organised by the Mao Union Kohima, bringing together elders, community leaders, cultural custodians and invited guests to mark the occasion with dignity, unity and pride in Mao heritage.
Losii Dikho, MLA, 48th Mao Assembly Constituency, Government of Manipur, graced the celebration as the Special Guest.

Addressing the gathering, he urged the community to remain deeply rooted in tradition while embracing positive change and progress. He lauded Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio for extending the Naga People’s Front into Manipur for the welfare of the Naga people, appreciated the Angami community for their protection and support, and acknowledged Shürhozelie Liezietsu for his contributions to the development of the Tenyidie language, which has played a vital role in uniting the Tenyimia people.
Helievio Solo, chairman, Kohima Village Council, attended as the Honoured Guest and emphasised the importance of unity, mutual respect and inter-community cooperation for peaceful coexistence and collective progress.
Special messages were delivered by Heshu Choro, Proprietor of Toyota Pro-Service, Heshu Choro Enterprise; Sibo Nekhini, General Manager and Officer-in-Charge, Reserve Bank of India, Kohima; and T Deilhoutuo Rhutso, MLA, who encouraged cultural preservation alongside social and economic development.

An informative segment highlighted the cultural significance of Chüthüni, described as the foremost festival of the Mao people. The thanksgiving festival marks the achievements and blessings of the past year and is traditionally observed over five days Nisha, Nijii, Oshu Kope and Oni Kono each characterised by specific rituals, feasting and social interactions that strengthen kinship ties and community solidarity.
The cultural segment featured captivating folk songs and traditional dances, vividly showcasing the rich cultural legacy and artistic expressions of the Mao community.
The programme was chaired by S Amo, while Chüthüni Shihra Kho Kapi formally welcomed the gathering. The welcome address was delivered by Krelo, president, Mao Union Kohima.
