Ukhrul: The passing of Dr. Gina Shangkham, a trailblazer and the first President of the Naga Women’s Union, Manipur (NWUM), has drawn an outpouring of heartfelt tributes from across the Naga community. Civil organizations and leaders have remembered her as a visionary whose extraordinary contributions advanced women’s empowerment, tribal welfare, and the broader cause of the Naga people.

The Naga Women’s Union mourned the loss of its founding president, describing her as a tireless advocate for justice, equality, and women’s rights. Her leadership established a strong foundation for the empowerment of Naga women, which remains a guiding force for the union’s ongoing work. The union expressed deep respect for her contributions and extended prayers for her family during this time of grief.

The Government of the People’s Republic of Nagalim (NSCN/GPRN) expressed deep sorrow at her demise and hailed her as a pioneer in the Naga community. As the first woman doctorate from the Moyon Naga Tribe and a founding member of NWUM, Dr. Shangkham was celebrated for her steadfast dedication to Naga history and political rights. The NSCN/GPRN also highlighted her selfless service to tribal communities, which earned her the prestigious “Laarchangnumn Award,” and offered condolences to her family, noting that her legacy would continue to inspire future generations.

Similarly, the Poumai Naga Tsiidoumai Me (PNTM) paid homage to Dr. Shangkham, recalling her as a remarkable leader who broke barriers and inspired countless others. As the first woman doctorate from the Moyon Naga Tribe, she was a beacon of hope and progress. Her commitment to tribal welfare and social justice earned her widespread recognition, including the “Laarchangnuw Award.”

The Naga People’s Organization (NPO) also joined in mourning her loss, describing her as a dedicated leader whose contributions left an indelible mark on the community. They acknowledged the immense void her passing had left and offered prayers for her family and loved ones.

Late Dr. Gina Shangkham’s funeral service will be held on January 3, Friday at Kapaam public ground at 10 AM. The funeral service will be administered by Rev. Dominic Lumon DD, Emeritus Archbishop of Imphal.
