Imphal: Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president K Meghachandra said that people are unable to participate in the Independence Day celebrations independently under the BJP government in the state as well as at the Centre.
“The mood of the citizens to celebrate the Independence Day has been adversely affected by the ever increasing prices of the essential commodities due to hike in the prices of the petroleum products, increased in the GST”, he alleged.
He said this during the “Ajadi ki Gourav Yatra” in Kakching district today, the second day of the programme.
“Ajadi ki Gourav Yatra” of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) to mark the 75 years of India’s independence which commenced on Wednesday was marched from Hiyanglam Bazar to Kakching Bazar today.
On Wednesday, the MPCC marched from Moirang to Oinam Bazar in Bishnupur district.
The Congress organized the yatra to mark the completion of 75 years of India’s independence. Like in other states of the country, the Congress will cover 75 km in the state too.
Today’s march was participated by many leaders of the MPCC including former chief minister O Ibobi Singh and sitting and former MLAs among others.
During the march, various slogans against hikes in the prices of petroleum products, essential commodities and GST were shouted.
The MPCC leader then said that the BJP government in the state has been gagging the people, particularly educationists and intellectuals by passing order after order banning them from speaking against the government.
“The order passed yesterday asking the employees to exit from the social media groups was the latest one”, he alleged.

Meanwhile, Congress party in Manipur also strongly reacted to a government office memorandum setting its officials to exit from social media groups within 48 hours. The Manipur government, in an office memorandum issued on Wednesday, asked its employees to leave social media groups that are “furthering separatist, anti-national, communal and divisive agenda” by 6 p.m. of August 12.
“It is a clear violation of the rights to information given to the citizens by the constitution of India,” said Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) K Meghachandra today.
Talking to reporters on the sideline of party’s “Ajadi ki Gourav Yatra” in Kakching district today, Meghachandra observed that social media like Whatsapp, Facebook etc. are the effective platforms that one can know the news of events happening in the state and other parts of the globe.
The MPCC leader said that banning government employees from participating in social media groups is nothing but violation of one’s rights given under the constitution of India.
He added that such violation of rights of the citizens was not the first time since the BJP came to power in the country. There were many instances of the BJP government violating the rights of freedom of speech of the media and right to information of the citizens, he further added.
The move of banning the employees participating in the social media group amounts to suppressing the freedom of expression and the right to information of the employees, he said.
