Shillong, Oct 21: Congress chief of Meghalaya and Shillong MP, Vincent H Pala has slammed the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for “giving only lip service” in regards to the long pending demand for inclusion of Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution of India.

“Today the government has given enough lip service for pushing (this issue) but practically if they (NPP) are with the BJP they can tell the BJP and there is no problem for the BJP to recognize it,” Pala told reporters.

“The BJP had also included it in their manifesto but nothing has been done on the matter,” he added.

The Shillong MP also said that the MDA government is doing enough but is only giving lip service to the demand for inclusion of Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule.

Stating that Khasi language is one among the 38 languages awaiting recognition, Pala said, “The BJP if it wants to do it they can do it because from Khasi Author Society and from the government and from our
side we push for it very hard and hopefully it should be recognized by this time but when the government will do that I doubt that they will do it.”
