Congress party in Manipur joins protests against Agneepath scheme

Imphal: Congress in Manipur joined the party’s nationwide protest against Agneepath scheme on Monday.

The Union government had last week unveiled the scheme under which the youth aged 17 and a half and 23 will be recruited in the Army, Navy and Air Force on contractual basis for four years.

The announcement has triggered protests across the country. The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) claimed that the sit-in protests were staged by the activists of the party across the 60 blocks of the party.

In Thoubal district, the protests were held at Thoubal Athokpam, Heirok, Lilong, Yairipok, Khangabok, etc. while the same was held in Nambol and other parts of Bishnupur district. The protests staged under the aegis of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), demanded immediate withdrawal of the scheme, alleging that the scheme will destroy the careers of the youths of the country.

Talking to reporters at one of the protests staged at Khangabok, president of the Kangabok Block Congress Committee Alas Md Husain alleged the scheme was launched not in the interest of the country but for the benefits of the BJP only.

He said that as the scheme allowed youths serving in the Army, Navy and Air Force on contractual basis only for four years, it would be devastating to the future careers of the youths.

As it is only for four years, there is apprehension of the youths who failed to qualify for the regular appointment in the services being diverted from the mainstream.

The scheme is an anti-youth scheme and it was launched only to gain political mileage by the ruling BJP. The Congress will continue to protest until and unless it is withdrawn, he said.

The Congress organized the protests showing solidarity to the youths of the country who were protesting against the scheme, he added.

It is the bounden duty of the Congress to save the youths of the country from being destroyed by the BJP-led Modi government at the Centre, the block Congress leader asserted

In another protest staged at Nambol, president of the Nambol Block Congress Committee, S Chandrakanta alleged that Agneepath scheme is a scheme that will spoil the youths who are the future pillars of the nation.
