Imphal: Congress party in Manipur on Saturday carried out a protest rally amid police restrictions in Imphal East. The opposition party organized the protest rally as a part of AICC’s countrywide 15 days “Jana Jagratha” rally against the rising petrol and diesel prices in the country. The protest started on November 14 and will end on November 29.

Today’s protest rally was carried out by Congress workers and supporters of a Congress intending candidate of Kshetrigao Assembly Constituency, Poonam Rani on the roads at Imphal East district headquarters. The rally started around 11 am from the residence of the intending candidate at Thawanthaba Leikai and marched towards the Imphal East DC office.

Even as the police tried their best to foil the rally from carrying out further, the participants went ahead with the protest.

A police team led by OC of Porompat police station tried to stop the rally from carrying out while informing that CrPC 144 is in place in the entire district. However, another police team led by SDPO Porompat was forced to stop the rally near the DC office complex.

The police snatched flags and placards used by the rallyists while escorting back the rally upto the originating place.

Congress intending candidate Poonam Rani strongly condemned the actions of the police while asserting that in a democratic country, citizens have the rights to air grievances to the government.
