Opposition Congress party in Manipur has reiterated its demand for disqualification of 12 MLAs who were appointed as parliamentary secretaries. The Congress party has submitted a memorandum to the Manipur Governor on Friday.

The memorandum was submitted by a Congress delegation led by former chief minister O Ibobi Singh who is also the leader of the opposition in the Manipur Legislative Assembly.

The Ibobi-led delegation included Congress MLAs Gaikhangam, K Ranjit Singh, Konthoujam Govindas, Keisham Meghachandra Singh and DD Thaisii.

The N Biren Singh-led BJP’s coalition government in the state enacted the Manipur Parliamentary Secretary (Appointment, Salary And Allowances and Miscellaneous Provisions) Repealing Act, 2018 and appointed 12 MLAs of the ruling parties as parliamentary secretaries.

Addressing a press conference after submitting the memorandum, O Ibobi Singh said that the appointment of the 12 parliamentary secretaries was illegal and against the constitution. “The Governor was requested to take appropriate actions and disqualify them as per the Constitution of India,” Ibobi said.

The former three time chief minister alleged that right from its inception the incumbent BJP-led coalition government in the state has been indulging in “illegal and unconstitutional acts”. He added, “The incumbent government was even formed violating the constitution”. He further alleged, “The same is continuing till today”.
