COVID-19 cases in Meghalaya cross 1500

UT News Service | SHILLONG, Aug 19: Seventy-eight more people have tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday in Meghalaya, taking the total active cases in the State to 804, informed the Director of Health Services (MI), Dr. Aman War during his daily status briefing. The latest update would mean that the state has recorded a total number of  1,535 cases of COVID-19 till date.

He said that 47 new cases, including 30 civilians and 17 Border Security Force (BSF) troopers, were detected from East Khasi Hills district while 27 fresh cases were detected from West Garo Hills of which 18 are BSF jawans and 9 are civilians, 2 each from North Garo Hills and East Jaintia Hills.

Of the 30 civilians who tested positive in Shillong, Dr. War said that 18 were detected during a random testing conducted at Jhalupara and 6 each from Anjalee and Upper Mawprem, 3 from Tikrikilla and 6 from Phulbari both in West Garo Hills, while 2 cases in East Jaintia Hills are returnees from Assam and the 2 cases in North Garo Hills include a returnee from Assam and 1 from the random sampling test.

Dr. War informed that 40 more patients, including 23 from East Khasi Hills (21 civilians, 1 BSF, 1 AF (Armed Force), 9 from West Garo Hills (8 BSF, 1 civilian) and 8 from Ri Bhoi, have recovered from the viral infection today, adding that the total number of recoveries in the State now stands at 725.

East Khasi Hills is the worst affected district with 470 cases – 298 civilians, 96 BSF and 76 AF, followed by West Garo Hills with 207 cases and 95 cases in Ri Bhoi.

In the other districts, North Garo Hills has 10 cases, 8 in East Jaintia Hills, 4 each in West Jaintia Hills and South West Garo Hills, 3 in West Khasi Hills, 2 in South Garo Hills and 1 in South West Khasi Hills.

Dr. War further informed that the 44,695 samples were sent for testing till Wednesday of which 42,700 were found to be negative while test results of approximately 416 are yet to be determined. “There are 29,135 entrants from outside till date,” he said.

Meanwhile, the State has recorded a total of 1,535 COVID-19 cases which includes 804 active cases and six deaths.
