CHURACHANDPUR: The district-level celebration of the 80th Independence Day was held today at Peace Ground, Tuibong. Deputy commissioner Krishna Kumar, IAS, hoisted the National Flag and took the Rashtriya Salute as chief guest, with SDPO Jay Barange, IPS, commanding 34 march-past contingents, including the Military Band from 27 Sector Assam Rifles. Students of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Tuinom, led the singing of the National Song and National Anthem.
For the first time in the district, departmental tableaux from Social Welfare, Forest, Health, MSRLM to Agriculture were part of the parade, alongside banners displaying various departments’ achievements.
In his address, the deputy commissioner reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to constitutional values, transparency and rule of law, citing initiatives such as the Jan Kalyan Shivirs and ongoing Jan Sunwai grievance camps. He highlighted progress in healthcare, including new orthopaedic services and renewal of the district hospital’s blood bank license, along with efforts in early childhood development through upgraded Anganwadi Centres.
He also spoke on women- and child-welfare programmes (Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Bal Vivah Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, OSC-SAKHI), rural livelihood support through self-help groups, and initiatives encouraging farmers and youth toward entrepreneurship, including seed and manure distribution and skill-training partnerships with TATA STRIVE.

Infrastructure efforts cited included the Jal Jeevan Mission, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin, and highway construction. The DC also addressed drug abuse as a major concern, referencing the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, and spoke on the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, environmental plantation drives, and the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign.
The event concluded with cultural performances, appreciation certificates presented to government employees, police personnel, institutions and organisations, and a mass pledge-taking ceremony against drug abuse. Similar celebrations were held at Singngat and Henglep sub-divisional headquarters.
Reportedly, over 50 students who took part in the parade were hospitalized after prolonged exposure to the sun, having reportedly stood for three to four hours amid heat and apparent dehydration.
