Dept of English and Cultural Studies, Manipur University set up Mini Library at Porompat Veterinary Relief camp

Imphal: The MA students and research scholars under the guidance of prof I Gambhir Singh, HOD English, and Cultural Studies, Manipur University organized a field trip to Porompat Veterinary Relief Camp, 3- Khurai (under L Susindro Meitei Yaima minister govt of Manipur supported by deputy commissioner, Imphal East). With class representatives from MA students, the team promptly donated essentials to the families, children and elders staying in the relief camp.

Speaking to the gathering, prof I Gambhir Singh, HOD English and Cultural Studies, MU expressed his concern by extending mental support and making them aware of possible opportunities present. He further recollects his visits to Moreh where he formed educational camps in schools and various institutes. He shares his endeavour in researching therelations between the meiteis and tribals residing in Moreh.

Relaying his conversation with Oja Ibohal and how he got to know the depth of their struggles during their displacement, he explains the importance of the visit and how it will help the students to understand the ground reality of the inmates in relief camps.

Finally, he concluded by illuminating the gathering that the visit is not just a one-time visit where it is left with a “visit once and forget” event. Rather he emphasizes the visit as a platform for the gathering to understand the needs and hardships of displaced people hit by the conflict.

Relief campers of all ages shared their grievances and appreciation for the visit. They also prompted the assemblage to continue to pray and help the displaced inmates located in different regions with a humble solution to their lives.

The children exhibited their talents through dance, songs, drawings, storytelling, and other performances. Children stood up to share their raw experiences that took place during and after the conflict. Literary contests namely quiz on science, current affairs, geography, and grammar were conducted and after that, prizes were distributed to all the winners fair and square.

Story books, notebooks, textbooks, colours, pencil boxes, world map, modern periodic table chart, essential stationary items along with bookshelves were handed over for establishing the mini library.

Charcoal, meiphu (traditional room heater), water containers, thermos flasks, sanitary pads, snacks, and drinks were distributed to the relief camp. A scrumptious lunch was laid out for the entire congregation.
