SENAPATI/UKHRUL: Displaced villagers from Tapon Namguang (Upper) village were brought to the Senapati district headquarters on Thursday evening. They were first taken to the Senapati Police Station and later moved to a temporary relief camp at Taphou Liangmai. The camp has been set up by district civil society organizations in coordination with the district administration of Senapati.
A total of 45 displaced villagers from Tapon Namguang (Upper) were evacuated from the village by the Senapati Police and the Assam Rifles. However, only 23 of them—comprising the elderly, women, and children—have been placed at the temporary relief camp, while the remaining villagers are staying with relatives in and around the district headquarters.
It may be noted that three Liangmai Naga villages along the Imphal–Tamenglong Road, under T. Waichong Sub-Division in Kangpokpi district, were burned down by Kuki militants in the early hours of September 1. More than 30 residential houses, including a church, were reduced to ashes during the incident.
Ng. Chunthan, spokesperson for the NPO, told the media that 45 displaced villagers from Tapon Namguang (Upper) had been evacuated and brought to Senapati with the help of the district police and the Assam Rifles. Of these, 23 have been housed at the temporary relief camp at Taphou Liangmai, which was established by district civil organizations in coordination with the district administration. The NPO spokesperson also mentioned that the district administration has assured all possible support to the displaced people.
Meanwhile, some villagers whose houses were burned are still at Tapon Namsan (Lower), including several who were injured during the firing. District civil society organizations have urged the concerned authorities, particularly the security forces, to evacuate them as soon as possible.
