Chandel: District Health Society, District Mental Programme, Chandel observed ‘World Suicide Prevention Day 2021’ on Saturday at District Hospital Chandel under the theme “Creating Hope Through Action”.
CMO Chandel Dr. Serthani Serbum, Medical Superintendent Dr. Joyson Mathew, Associate Professor UCC, Mobershing Monsang and District Nodal Officer, District Mental Health Programme, Chandel Dr. Kh. Robindro Singh grace the function as Chief Guest, President and Guest of Honour respectively.
Speaking on the occassion, Dr. Serthani Serbum emphasized that the general public should be more cautious about signs and warning of suicide in order to prevent suicide. She also expressed her willingness to organize more such awareness programme at village level to sensitise the village about suicide and it’s prevention.
Dr. Joyson Mathew Monsang stressed on medical professionals, nurses and help desk staff to take proper case history of any patient who come to hospital for treatment to find out any tendency of suicide. According to him, proper counselling also be given to the patient brought to hospital with attempted suicide or survivor to avoid future attempt.
Guest of honour Mobershing Monsang expressed his view that unemployment is also a major cause of suicide among youths in particular. He emphasized that the NGOs, doctors, church etc have important role to play in curbing suicide while speaking on the occassion.
It is worth mentioning that World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) was first launched in the year 2003 on September 10 by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) in collaboration with WHO and World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH). International Association for Suicide Prevention announced the theme for the years 2021-2023 “Creating Hopes Through Action”.
