Senapati: District Mental Health Program (DMHP), Senapati observed World Suicide Prevention Day, 2022 under the theme, “Creating Hope through Action” at DRDA Hall, Senapati. The event was graced by Dr. Pfokreho Pfoze, CMO/Director, District Health Society, Senapati as the chief guest.
In his keynote address, Dr. Ngouniba Peter, District Nodal Officer, DMHP, Senapati stated that the day is normally observed on September 10 worldwide. However, the DNO mentioned that the day was postponed till this day due to technical problem. The cause of the day’s observation was stated to create awareness about Suicide Prevention among the policy makers and to all the citizens over the world.

Suicide prevention is not just the responsibility of one person but the responsibility of every citizen, every community, every department and every ministry. The theme is a reminder to all that there is an alternative to suicide that aims to inspire confidence and light to all as given in the theme. Records reportedly mentioned that over 7 lakhs committed suicide globally and another who attempted suicide but failed. India recorded 1,64,300 suicides reported in the year 2021 as per National Crime Bureau records. The rate of suicide is reportedly increasing per year where it is stated to be not just a health issue but a social issue. The DNO then urged all stakeholders to collaborate and cooperate each other and to work together to bring this epidemic under control. Dr. Peter calls to act now before it is too late as to “create hope through action.”

Speaking as the chief guest, Dr. Pfokreho Pfoze, CMO/Director, District Health Society, Senapati stated that a person who is at his lowest point commits suicide. When a person is found to be at his lowest point, the CMO urged to help and assist to bring up that person where every person has a role to play. Every person is unique in their own way with different talents and nobody can substitute the other. People used to get depressed only when someone compare with the other. Suicide is reportedly found most common in the age group of 15-18 years of age where the person is not matured in the age group. Families, institutions, communities at church level, school level are stated to be very important to impart knowledge on how to face the world and make correct decision. CMO asserted that suicide or suicidal tendency is not a crime but a sickness and urged all to heal the sickness to make Senapati a free suicide related deaths in future.

Resource persons including Dr. B.K. Gracy, Psychiatrist, District Hospital, Senapati talked on “Mental health and suicide,” KD. Hrangaolou, Psychiatric Social Worker on “Ways to prevent suicide,” Koshia Mao, Addl. Public Prosecutor & Addl. Govt Advocate, Govt of Manipur on “Legal aspects in regard to suicide,” T. Haokip, Addl. Superintendent of Police (Law & Order), Senapati on how Police take action after a suicide and how investigation carried out and Vikui Emerson, Principal, Saklim High School spoke on behalf of All Private Schools Association, Senapati about how school association in Senapati are giving counselling to the school children.

District Police officers, army officers, medical doctors, social workers, student leaders, religious leaders, etc attended the program. Interaction hour followed in the later part of the program.
