UKHRUL: Dhanamanjuri University (DMU) observed National Nutrition Month at the central hall of G.P. Women’s College in Imphal on Saturday, with speakers discussing nutrition awareness, student participation and the role of Anganwadi services in community health.
Speaking as the chief guest, DMU Vice-Chancellor Prof. W. Chandbabu Singh said greater public awareness and professional engagement were needed to address nutrition-related concerns. He also acknowledged the work of Anganwadi workers in providing care and support to children and elderly people, particularly those from underprivileged sections.
Prof. Chandbabu said the observance brought together students, teachers and professionals to discuss nutrition-related health concerns and their relevance to everyday life.
The programme was organised by the Department of Home Science, G.P. Women’s College, under the theme “Hamari Anganwadi Hamari Jimmedari (Our Anganwadi Our Responsibility),” focusing on the role of Anganwadi services in nutrition and community well-being.
Prof. L. Hemchandra Singh, Dean, School of Life Sciences, DMU, said the month-long observance would provide students and researchers an opportunity to engage with issues related to nutrition and the role of Anganwadi centres in community-based nutrition initiatives.
A seminar on nutritional deficiencies was also held as part of the programme. Pratibha Khoyumthem, Child Development Project Officer, Department of Social Welfare, and Prof. Kh. Lokeshwar Singh, MD (Medicine) and former Medical Superintendent of JNIMS, were the resource persons.

The speakers discussed the importance of nutrition education and healthy and balanced food practices, particularly among children.
The programme also included competition display stalls and a “Fit Check” stall, where students and delegates could receive basic health and nutrition assessments. The stall provided guidance on Body Mass Index (BMI) and monitored parameters including blood pressure, blood glucose and haemoglobin under the supervision of research scholars and certified dietitians from the department.
The programme was presided over by Prof. L. Hemchandra Singh, while Prof. L. Rajen Singh, Principal of G.P. Women’s College, attended as guest of honour.
Meanwhile, DMU conducted its Student Induction Programme (SIP) for newly admitted postgraduate students of the School of Life Sciences on Friday.
