Durand Cup Trophy Unveiled in Guwahati Ahead of Tournament

GUWAHATI, July 16 (SHABD): The city of Guwahati welcomed the iconic Durand Cup trophies today with a grand ceremony at Hotel Taj Vivanta, marking the beginning of the Trophy Tour for the 135th IndianOil Durand Cup.

Assam Sports and Youth Welfare Minister Biswajit Daimary attended the event as the chief guest. Senior officials from the Sports and Youth Welfare Department, Indian Army officers and noted footballer Parthib Sundar Gogoi were also present.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister Daimary highlighted the importance of football in Assam and thanked the Indian Army for its continued efforts in organising the Durand Cup in the state. Indian Army officials reaffirmed their commitment to promoting sports and nurturing young football talent in the Northeast, while Parthib Sundar Gogoi urged football fans to come out in large numbers to support the tournament.

Following the ceremony, the trophies were flagged off for a city tour. Over the next two days, they will be displayed at the Assam Legislative Assembly Building, the Lachit Borphukan statue, IIT Guwahati and City Centre Mall.

The 135th edition of the Durand Cup, Asia’s oldest football tournament, will be held from 25 July to 23 August, featuring 24 teams, including two foreign clubs, across multiple venues, including Guwahati.
