Senapati, May 5: The breathtaking highland of Dziiduri, located above Khumai (Tunggam) village in Paomata Block, Senapati District, is rapidly gaining recognition as one of Northeast India’s most captivating eco-tourism destinations. With its rich ecological features, deep cultural heritage, and mythical landscapes, Dziiduri offers an unforgettable experience for travelers seeking both natural splendor and cultural depth.

Situated at an altitude of approximately 1,960 meters above sea level, this highland wetland gives rise to cascading streams and waterfalls, including the iconic Dziitrulai Waterfall. Adding to the natural wonder is the Abulya Cliff, a dramatic rock formation renowned for its stacked structure and legendary significance. Perched atop Abulya lies Natousalai, a sacred site where women traditionally performed rituals to predict their marital fate, a practice deeply woven into the region’s oral traditions.

The natural beauty of Dziiduri is unparalleled. The hilltop offers expansive views of Mt. Isii, Manipur’s highest peak, along with terraced paddy fields and lush forested valleys. With its tranquil, pollution-free atmosphere, Dziiduri is an ideal retreat for nature lovers, trekkers, cultural tourists, and adventure seekers. Each season brings a unique charm, making it a year-round destination.

To elevate Dziiduri’s tourism potential, the Khumai Youth and Students’ Organisation (KYSO), in partnership with Hills Eco Adventure Tourism – Manipur (HEAT-M), has launched an ambitious project to develop the area into a sustainable eco-tourism hub. Among the most anticipated developments is the installation of a zip-lining facility, currently underway. This flagship project is expected to attract adventure enthusiasts and generate employment opportunities for local youth.

In addition to the zip-line, a range of eco-friendly initiatives has been proposed to enhance tourist infrastructure. These include boating on the scenic lakes, well-marked trekking routes, a panoramic watchtower, wooden benches for rest, a designated oxygen point for high-altitude refreshment, a hanging bridge to add adventure and accessibility, and the cultivation of native orchids along the trails to promote biodiversity and natural beauty.

All initiatives are designed with sustainability and minimal ecological disruption in mind, ensuring that Dziiduri’s unique environment is preserved for generations to come. These projects also provide long-term benefits to local communities, many of whom rely on traditional farming, by creating new income streams and involving them directly in tourism development. Both KYSO and HEAT-M remain committed to preserving Dziiduri’s natural and cultural treasures while promoting responsible tourism.

To assess the progress of the eco-tourism initiative, a site inspection was recently conducted by key officials and stakeholders. The visiting team included Shanngam S, IFS, Divisional Forest Officer of Senapati Forest Division, Government of Manipur; Benjamin Ziipao, Range Forest Officer of Liyai Khunou Range; Traole Rai, President of HEAT-M; and Thozii Pao, General Secretary of HEAT-M, along with other members of the organization.

Dziiduri is more than just a travel destination, it is a living story of water, wind, legend, and landscape. With every gust of wind through Abulya and every cascade from Dziitrulai, Dziiduri extends an open invitation to the world to experience its untamed beauty and timeless tales.
