Agartala, Aug 20: E-commerce giant Flipkart has made a strategic move to capture the untapped potential of India’s Northeast region by launching its first grocery fulfillment center in Tripura’s state capital city, Agartala, marking a significant milestone in the company’s nationwide expansion strategy.

Officials emphasized, the 35,000 square feet facility, inaugurated on Tuesday, represents Flipkart’s first grocery fulfillment center in the state and will provide delivery slots according to consumer preferences across Agartala and nearby areas. The center is equipped with a daily dispatch capacity of 5,000 orders and will serve not only Tripura but also Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Nagaland.

The facility will offer a curated selection of over 4,000 products spanning essential categories, including staples such as flour, rice, and pulses, alongside snacks, beverages, personal care items, and household essentials. Leveraging local consumer insights, the center will stock several locally popular brands to cater to the diverse preferences of consumers across the region.

Tripura Chief Minister Professor (Dr.) Manik Saha welcomed the development, stating, “I am pleased to extend my heartfelt congratulations on the establishment of Flipkart’s new grocery fulfillment center in Agartala, Tripura. This development marks an important step in enhancing the state’s digital infrastructure and strengthening our supply chain capabilities”.

“I am confident that this initiative will contribute meaningfully to local employment generation and skill development, empowering our youths and communities. Tripura is committed to fostering a progressive and digitally connected ecosystem, and we welcome investments that align with this goal,” Dr. Saha added.

The fulfillment center is expected to generate more than 200 direct and indirect employment opportunities while unlocking market access for small businesses, micro, small and medium enterprises, and local farmers. This launch forms part of Flipkart’s broader strategy to enhance serviceability in the Northeast region while empowering local ecosystems through economic participation.

Meanwhile, Rajneesh Kumar, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer at Flipkart Group, emphasised the strategic importance of the expansion. “As a customer-first organisation, Flipkart leverages its homegrown technology to keenly identify high-demand hotspots and address consumer needs for quality grocery products,” he said.

“The launch of our first grocery fulfillment center in Tripura marks a significant advancement in our efforts to enhance delivery services and meet the growing consumer demand for online groceries in the Northeast region. As we continue to expand our footprint across the country, the new FC aligns with our commitment to strengthening partnerships with local farmers, MSMEs, and other regional businesses. We remain committed to furthering our vision of empowering these communities economically and fostering sustainable growth while creating new livelihood opportunities,” he added.

Officials believe the new facility will supplement and strengthen Flipkart’s existing supply chain delivery infrastructure in the Northeast, reducing delivery timelines across the region. They further highlighted that Tripura is emerging as a key market for digital retail in the Northeast, with growing demand for e-grocery services and an expanding digital footprint that presents significant growth opportunities.
