Four civilians injured in bomb explosion in Ukhrul

Ukhrul: Four persons on Wednesday were reportedly injured at an explosion at Phungreitang, Ukhrul, that occurred at around 5 pm.

According to Ukhrul Police, the injured persons have been identified as Manaowon (female) 49 years from Chingai village, Dr. Wonyao Kasar (35) from Phungyar, Angayung Rizat (39) from Lamlang Village and P. Leishingam (37) from Roni Village.

Sub-Inspector W. Marchang informed that the explosion happened at Gandhi statue erected at Phungreitang, Ukhrul. Police collected pellets from the cradle of explosion, just a few feet away from the statue, and suspect that it could be an improvised hand grenade.

Sources from Bethany Clinic informed the correspondent that “Manaowon” of Chingai received 2 pellets injury on the right hand and one on the right side of her abdomen. She has been referred to JNIMS, Imphal for further treatment. Reports say that two pellets entered her stomach which require immediate treatment.

Speaking to this correspondent, Dr. Wonyao Kasar informed that she was pulling the shutter of her Ura Clinic as it was time to close shop. “Suddenly, there was a loud explosion and two hard objects hit my right face. After getting two stitches from Bethany Clinic, Phungreitang, I went home,” she said.

According to the report received, Angayung Rizat  received injury in his forehead and P. Leishingam is taking X-ray at Leishiphung Christian Hospital. Pellet seemed to have entered in his body via below right arm. P. Leishingam is a teacher at Little Angels’ English School, Ukhrul. They were all returning home after the day chores.

Vice president of Tangkhul Naga Long, Jollyson R Shimray decried and condemned the bomb explosion and appealed to the perpetrators to refrain from such inhumane activities. “Creating fear psychosis in the heart and peaceful town of Ukhrul should be condemned by everyone,” he added.

No one has claimed responsibility while filing this report. Gandhi Chowk is just a few meters away from the Ukhrul Police Reserve Line.
