Imphal: The Global Liangmai Forum (GLF) has strongly condemned the “disgraceful incident” that had happened on April 11 in Noney and Tamenglong, “where miscreants disrupted the election campaign of Dr. Alyson Abonmai, an independent candidate contesting in the ensuing Lok Sabha election from the Outer Parliamentary constituency of Manipur.

The Liangmai  body alleged that, in an appalling display of lawlessness, these miscreants obstructed the participants from attending the campaigning event, even to the extent of preventing a pastor from offering prayers.

“The shocking incident extended to denying Dr. Abonmai the basic needs to purchase fruits in the Rani Gaidinliu Market, Tamenglong,” it further alleged.

“Such reprehensible behavior against a candidate for the esteemed position of Member of Parliament in the world’s largest democracy is utterly unacceptable.

The Global Liangmai Forum unequivocally denounces this act of cowardice and intimidation,” the GLF added.

The GLF then said every right thinking citizen should condemn “such flagrant violations” of democratic processes and rights. The freedom to participate in electoral processes without fear or coercion is fundamental to the integrity of democracy, it further added.

The Global Liangmai Forum also said it stands in solidarity with Dr. Alyson Abonmai and all candidates who are courageously upholding democratic values despite facing “adversity and GLF also appeals to all fellow citizens to follow the path of non-violence as shown to us by the father of this nation”.
