SENAPATI: The Naga People’s Organisation (NPO), Senapati, and the North Eastern Federation of Trade Union (NEFTU) have strongly condemned the alleged arson of a goods-laden truck along National Highway-2, terming the act unlawful, barbaric, and a direct threat to public safety and economic stability.

According to reports, a Tata truck bearing Registration No. NL-07AA 2863 was set ablaze on March 2, at around 8:30 AM near Kabinam Village along NH-02, reportedly between Lairou and Maram. The vehicle, which was carrying TMT bars and plastic barrels, was deliberately torched in broad daylight, resulting in significant material loss and sparking fear among local residents, transporters, traders, drivers, and handymen.

In a statement, the NPO unequivocally denounced the incident, stating that such destructive and unlawful acts are unacceptable in any civilised society. The organisation said the arson has not only disturbed peace and normalcy in the area but has also undermined the harmony of the district. It urged the concerned authorities to conduct a thorough, serious, and time-bound investigation and to take stringent action against those responsible at the earliest. Reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding the safety and security of citizens, the NPO assured full cooperation to ensure that the perpetrators are identified and brought to justice.

Echoing similar sentiments, NEFTU described the act as “barbaric and cowardly,” stating that targeting a vehicle transporting essential goods amounts to an attack on the region’s economic lifeline. The federation said the incident reflects a blatant disregard for law and public security, while disrupting the smooth and uninterrupted movement of trade along the highway.

Expressing solidarity with the affected vehicle owner and the transport fraternity, NEFTU categorically denounced attempts to create fear and destabilise peace through violence. The federation demanded immediate and decisive action to identify and apprehend those responsible and called for strengthened preventive and security measures to ensure the safe movement of goods along NH-2.

Describing highways as vital arteries that sustain commerce and daily life, NEFTU reiterated its commitment to peace, justice, and the protection of workers’ rights, and appealed to all stakeholders to stand united against violence and lawlessness
