Responding to the WC-NNPG’s public statement on Naga Flag (“Clear Space of Naga Flag”, Eastern Mirror, Dec. 18, 2020) the Global Naga Forum (GNF) on Monday said that for reasons they were unaware of, GNF was one of the Naga public groups WC-NNPG called out “to belittle and criticize” in their statement.

According to the GNF statement, the Global Naga Forum is a diverse group of Nagas from around the world.

“We are a relatively new Forum but our members have deep roots in Naga history and commitment to the human rights of the Nagas as a people. Since we don’t know why WC-NNPGs would come after us, we are obliged to respond and make our position on the Indo-Naga political issue simple and clear to the WC-NNPG and GoI, but especially to the Naga public,” said the statement of Media Cell, GNF.

The press note further said, “We live in an unfortunate time and world of fake news and dubious alternative realities of our own making. It is therefore critical for Nagas to hold fast to the most fundamental facts about ourselves at this time.” These fundamental facts, according to GNF are:

Basic Fact 1: God and nature have made Nagas a people and a nation.

Basic Fact 2: The Human Rights of the Nagas as a people are not for sale. The future of the Nagas belongs to all the Nagas; it is not in the hands of the government of India or a particular Naga group by themselves.

“The Global Naga Forum therefore stands for these basic facts about Nagas,” the statement continued, adding that it “opposes any move, decision, or agreement that seeks to divide the Nagas and barter away our rights as a people now or in the future”.
