GOC Spear Corps Visits Somsai and Interacts With Ex-Servicemen

Ukhrul, May 24: The General Officer Commanding Spear Corps Lieutenant General Abhijit S Pendharkar (AVSM, YSM) visited Somsai on Saturday, reaffirming its commitment to veterans, Veer Naaris and Widows.

The GOC along with Maj General Ravroop Singh (YSM, SM) IG AR(S) held a cordial and meaningful interaction with 300 ex-servicemen including Veer Naaris & Widows of the Ukhrul region at Somsai Garrison on 24 May 25.

The event was organized as part of the Assam Rifles continued outreach programme to foster stronger ties with its veteran community and address their welfare concerns.

During the interaction, GOC , Spear Corps expressed his deep respect and gratitude for the invaluable contributions made by the ex-servicemen in safeguarding the nation. He reiterated the Assam Rifles unwavering commitment to supporting its veterans and ensuring their well-being. He also highlighted the role of ex-servicemen in the betterment of the society at large.

A wide range of issues were discussed, including pension disbursement, resettlement opportunities, medical facilities under ECHS with the veterans. The GOC Spear Corps assured them of timely redressal through appropriate channels.

The GOC also highlighted various ongoing and upcoming welfare initiatives undertaken by the Assam Rifles and MoD to enhance the quality of life for veterans and their families. The Ex-Servicemen appreciated the opportunity to voice their issues and expressed gratitude for the Assam Rifles continued care and engagement.

The interaction concluded with a felicitation ceremony honouring Veer Naaris & Widows. A True reflection of a renewed sense of camaraderie, as the GOC emphasized that every soldier—serving or retired—remains an integral part of the Assam Rifles family.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks and a promise to continue supporting the welfare of ex-Servicemen, Veer Naaris and widows.

“There are 660 ex-servicemen. Out of which 530 pensioners and 130 widows in Ukhrul District” informed H. Hormi, Subedar Major (Retd) President of Ukhrul Zila Sainik Board, Ukhrul Headquarters.

AS. Pamrei (Ex-Havildar), President of Assam Rifles Ex-Servicemen Association, Ukhrul informed that there are 450 ex-servicemen of Assam Rifles. Besides there are Army Wife Welfare Association, Ukhrul numbering about 70 Assam Rifles Wifes Welfare Association, Ukhrul numbering about 60.
