NEW DELHI/UKHRUL: In the wake of the killing of a well-known musician from Manipur in the national capital, Joram Maivio Woba, special invitee to the Monitoring Committee, MHA, and member of the Bezbaruah Committee, MHA, GoI, expressed serious concern and stressed that the issues faced by people from the Northeast are genuine, and that the government must continue to act decisively to address them and prevent such incidents.
“The issues faced by people from the North East are chronic and recurring. There is no quick-fix solution, but by denying the reality, we cannot solve the problem. We must acknowledge that there is a genuine problem, and the Government must continue to act decisively to address it and prevent such incidents,” Maivio said.

Taking serious note of the recurring attacks on people from the Northeast, including the case of 54-year-old Chongtham Vikram, the Monitoring Committee held a meeting on Tuesday and discussed several issues, including the need for the government to take stringent action and concrete measures to prevent incidents of attacks on people from Northeast India in the future.
Musician Chongtham Vikram Singh from Manipur succumbed to his injuries after he was allegedly assaulted by a group of men in New Delhi outside his residence in South east Delhi on September 6.
The Monitoring committee meeting was held on Tuesday, at Kartavya Bhavan, Ministry of Home Affairs. The meeting was held under the chairmanship of the joint secretary, North East Division, Ministry of Home Affairs.
Expressing deep concern, Maivio pointed out, “A number of initiatives have been undertaken by the Government, and the situation has improved in many respects. However, in light of the disturbing trends and incidents witnessed lately, we cannot help but ask ourselves: Are we doing enough?”
Saying that the killing of Chongtham is “deeply painful and completely unacceptable,” Maivio stressed that Justice must be delivered, and strong preventive measures must be enforced to ensure that such tragic and unjust acts are never repeated in the future.”
He also expressed that the issues and concerns faced by people from the North East in cities have deeper implications for the larger process of building national unity, integration, and social harmony.
Apart from the Chongtham murder case, the Monitoring Committee discussed key issues, including appointment of Nodal Officers in metropolitan cities, amendments to the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), inclusion of North East history and culture in school curricula, strengthening and monitoring initiatives undertaken by the Government.
The meeting also discussed the progress on the construction of the North East social and cultural institution, increasing manpower and strengthening SPUNER, review of North East hostels, review of cases and incidents involving people from the North East across the country, legal measures, police initiatives, sensitisation and awareness about North East India, implementation of Bezbaruah Committee recommendations, and strengthening coordination between concerned agencies and stakeholders.
Representatives from various states and concerned government departments and agencies, including the MHA officials, Delhi Police, MDoNER and NCERT attended the meeting.
