UKHRUL: The Guwahati Police have seized four vehicles and detained 14 people in connection with a birthday celebration held on the Kumar Bhaskar Varma Flyover that drew sharp criticism after videos of the event went viral on social media.

According to police, the incident came to light only after footage from the celebration began circulating online. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Jayanta Sarathi Bora said authorities subsequently launched an investigation into the matter.

Among the vehicles impounded by police are a Land Rover Defender, a Mercedes-Benz, a Mahindra Scorpio and a Honda City, all suspected to have been used during the gathering. The 14 individuals detained have been brought in for questioning, and investigators are currently examining their roles in the incident.

Police have registered a case (No. 79/2026) under Sections 125, 285 and 270 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The celebration was allegedly organised by North Guwahati-based businessman Gautam Baruah for his wife’s birthday. Videos shared online showed a red carpet spread across a section of the flyover, where a cake-cutting ceremony was held. Several vehicles were also seen parked on the roadway, leading to partial disruption of traffic movement.

The visuals triggered widespread condemnation, with social media users and members of the public accusing the participants of disregarding traffic norms and turning a public roadway into a private event venue. Many also raised concerns about the potential risk posed to motorists and commuters.

In a related development, Baruah was arrested on Tuesday in connection with the case. Bharalumukh Police had earlier summoned him for questioning after the videos gained traction online.
