Shillong: The Hynniewtrep Achik National Movement (HANM) has requested the banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) to include the demand for Inner Line Permit (ILP),  inclusion of Khasi language and boundary issue in its agenda for the peace talks with the government.

“We urge upon the HNLC to include ILP, inclusion of Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution and border issue in its agenda for peace talks as these are long pending demands and aspirations of the people of the state,” HANM president Lamphrang Kharbani told reporters.

Kharbani said the state government should also support these issues if they are to be included in the agenda of the HNLC.

“We feel that the talks would be more meaningful if these issues are being discussed during the tripartite peace dialogues between the Government of India, the State government and the HNLC,” he added.

The HANM president also hailed the government’s decision to have peace talks with the HNLC as this would bring long lasting peace in the Khasi and Jaintia Hills regions of the state.

According to him, the HNLC was formed with the sole objective to protect the interest of the indigenous Khasi and Jaintia community and the state as a whole. Therefore, the peace talk with the state and central government must be for the benefits and interest of the Meghalaya and its people, he added.
