Health minister seeks report on formalin-laced fish and animal diseases in Meghalaya

Shillong, June 19:  Meghalaya Health Minister, Ampareen Lyngdoh has sought reports from the Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Department and Fisheries Department into the diseases affecting pigs and cattle and the sale of formalin-laced imported fish in Meghalaya.

“I am seeking a report from the line departments on how much time it will take (to put) a cap on certain meat that is consumed by the public,” Lyngdoh told reporters today.

She said that the duty of the government is to take the advice of various line departments that are saying that there are certain diseases that could be dangerous for the consumption of meat of certain animals in the community and society.

“Therefore, this advisory has been issued to the public in the interest of the public keeping them well informed that in the matter of fish, we have seen that a random test was done and the advisory is that we should ensure the consumption of fish by the public should be healthy for them and should not cause any concern post consumption of that fish,” she said.

“There is a problem with a disease in pigs, a disease in cattle, particularly beef and when these information reached the attention of the government, the government is bounded by duty to inform the public that these are the advisories being received from the line departments and hence we caution the public on the consumption of such food,” she said while urging the public to adhere to the advisories issued by the line departments.
