Historic Northern Chief of Vafiimai’s Crowning Ceremony Underway at Laii Village

Senapati, Feb 18: The crowning ceremony of the new Northern Chief of Vafiimai village, Th. Visale, is underway at Laii village in Senapati district.

The declaration of the new headman/chief will be made by Kh. Ziirai, headman of Laii village.

Vafiimai is the largest village of the Poumai Naga community, located in the northernmost part of Senapati district, bordering Manipur’s neighboring Phek district in Nagaland.

Vafiimai’s unique tradition of having two chiefs—one for the northern and the other for the southern counterpart—reflects the village’s deeply rooted cultural affinity and rich heritage.

The ongoing program is attended by headmen and village chiefs from various villages in neighboring Nagaland, as well as from the Tangkhul, Mao, Maram, and Poumai communities.
