Houses in abandoned Kwatha Khunou catch fire

Imphal: Two houses in the abandoned Kwatha Khunou Meitei village, situated near Border pillar 81 of Indo-Myanmar Border caught fire Sunday evening around 6 pm.

Since the start of Manipur violence on May 3 last year, residents of the village had fled to Kwatha Khunjao for safety. The burnt down houses belonged to Ningthou Laishram Irabanta and W. Budha of Kwatha Khunou.

A team of SP Tengnoupal, SSP(Combat), 3 Assam Ridles CO, BSF along with District Police visited the spot Monday morning. On spot inspection, the team found one house and another Hut type structure burnt. According to police, prima facie does not seem to be an attack on whole village by armed miscreants as other nearby better structures are still intact.

Also, wildfire at this season was also cited by some of the villagers as possible reason.

Fire was first seen by villagers of Molphoi village. They informed the villagers of Kwatha Khullen and Molphoi villagers who tried to douse the fire. The statements of Secretary of Kwatha village and Village chief of Molphoi were taken.

Heavy security deployment is being undertaken.
