Humanitarian Assistance Extended to Myanmar Refugees in Kamjong Distt

Ukhrul: Khokha Yar Ukhrul Secondhand Association (KYUSA), Ihao Group, 35 Assam Rifles, Somsai and well wishers from Ukhrul Town donated blankets, clothes, soap, toothpaste, toothbrush and sanitary napkins to the refugees from Myanmar staying at Kheirongren Camp, Ramphoi.

At present, around 650 refugees are taking shelter at the Kheirongren Camp run and managed by Kheirongren Development Committee, Ramphoi and Raizan Traders Association (RTA).

James Shimthar Kasar, Additional SP of Kamjong, informed that due to the ongoing violence in Myanmar, many people from Myanmar have fled and moved towards Indian side. District Administration and Kamjong Police are carrying out a verification drive of all cross-border migrants with details such as name, age, sex, place of origin, etc. along with biometrics either through machine or inked finger marks of all ten fingers and photographs of each individual. No movement to be permitted towards Indian side beyond the designated camp set up in various villages. Any movement outside the designated camp is to be strictly done on proper verification.

Raizan Traders Association and Kheirongren Development Committee Ramphoi have been overseeing the refugee since November 22, 2023. Gideon Shadang informed that they have spent more than Rs. 6 lakhs. They have also helped in arranging vehicles to pick up the refugee from the borders. He also added that the 8th Assam Rifles have also extended various humanitarian assistance.

The volunteer engaged by Raizan Traders Association and Kheirongren Development Committee have set up more than 40 temporary camps for the refugees, who are mostly children, women and old age persons.

The refugee have moved in from Thanan (about 8 km), Aungzaya (about 3 km), Nangmo (about 2 km), Zeti (about 5 km), Mantoh (about 3 km), Phailan (about 4 km) and Soetharyar (about 4 km), all distance given from the present refugee camp at Kheirongren, Ramphoi.

The refugees have fled their respective villages out of fear and moved towards the Indian side for safe shelter without extra clothes. With the onset of winter, the people of Ukhrul have donated clothes and blankets and other essential items to the Myanmarese refugees.
