Imphal, September 20: Manipur film star Soma Laishram has expressed dismayed and strongly opposed the ban against her for three years by a civil body.

Kangleipak Kanba Lup (KKL), an Imphal-based organisation, has barred Soma Laishram from acting in films and attending social functions for three years for defying an appeal to celebrities not to attend or participate in social events in view of the ongoing Manipur crisis.

According to the group, popular actor Soma Laishram defied the appealed and attended as the showstopper for a beauty pageant at the North East Students’ Festival held in New Delhi on Saturday.

In a video recorded, Laishram, a well known actor with over 150 Manipuri films and won several awards, said that she was shocked and disheartened when she got the news of barring her from acting in films for three years.

“As an artist and as a social influencer, I have every right to speak my voice wherever I want to and wherever it is needed. I have not done anything against my state and my motherland Manipur,” said actor Laishram, who is also the ambassador of Manipur tourism department.

She further said that having being an outspoken person from the very start of the violence in the state, she said, “I have always been a die hard supporter of my motherland Manipur.”

“When I was called to represent Manipur in the northeast festival organised by My Home India as a showstopper, I only went with the intention of supporting my state, spreading awareness to the thousands of people present there. That was my only goal,” she said.

“So when such prohibition and slandering of my name by a civil group, it hurt and shocked me,” she added.

While thanking fans for morally supporting her, the Manipuri film star also appealed the people to “speak up for our motherland and for our people, and for more unity and less hatred.”

Film Forum Manipur (FFM), an umbrella organisation of all film bodies in the state, has also criticised the KKL’s decree on actor Soma Laishram and supported her stand.
