Imphal: An improvised explosive device (IED) planted by suspected militants exploded at the gate of a house in Imphal’s Thangmeiband Lourung Purel Leikai on Saturday night. No casualty was reported in the blast that occurred at the gate of Hijam Ibungo which falls under city police station at around 7:40 pm. The impact of the blast, however, damaged the GI-sheet gate and other structures nearby the blast site.

The blast incident was the second in the Imphal area within June. A powerful IED planted by suspected militants went off at the gate of Little Flower School in Imphal on June 5 last.

Meanwhile, the family of Hijam Ibungo said that they were uncertain about the reason behind the blast even though the police suspected monetary demand from a militant group.

Womenfolk of Thangmeiband Lourung Purel Leikai today staged a sit-in protest, registering a strong protest against the blast at a residential area. While denouncing the act of terrorizing the residents, the protesters demanded an end to the act of terrorizing the people, saying that there is no place for violence in a civilized society. “We do not welcome gun culture or any kind of violence,” one of the protesters said while seeking a clarification if any of the militant groups was behind the blast. The protesters also demanded that the police should arrest the culprit(s) at the earliest.
