Imphal: Anti-smuggling unit of the Imphal Customs division has arrested two persons including a woman for smuggling gold in two separate operations.
An official source from the Customs division on Monday said that the sleuths of the anti-smuggling unit seized 1.242 kilogram of gold of foreign origin worth Rs 54,97,332 from the Imphal Airport on September 15.
The man, later identified as Shakir Ahmed (26) of Thoubal district, was about to travel to New Delhi in an Air India flight on September 15. He was arrested from the departure hall of Imphal Airport.

Four oval shaped packets in paste form were recovered when the sleuths conducted a check, acting on a tip-off, the official said. The sleuths of the Imphal Customs division, in another operation based on reliable sources, confiscated three gold biscuits weighing 498 grams from the possession of a woman from Khongjom in Thoubal district where she was traveling in a Maruti-Eco Van.
The seized gold would be worth over Rs 25,39,800, the official said. The arrested woman was identified as M Jinat of Thoubal district.
