Imphal East: Two civilians, one suspected militant killed in crossfire

IMPHAL, May 29: At least three persons including a suspected militant died and some other injured as confrontation between militants and villagers continued at villages in the periphery of Manipur valley.

Reports said that the militants launched an attack at Leitanpokpi village under Sagolmang police station of Imphal East district bordering Kangpokpi district late last night.

The villagers guarding the village armed with single barrel and double barrel guns returned the firing. Security forces deployed near the village rushed to the spot and joined the gun battle to flush out the militants.

In the exchange of fire, two villagers succumbed to bullet injuries and some other injured, the reports said.

The security forces recovered the dead body of a suspected militant in an operation after the firing ceased, the reports further said.

The militants continued to attack various villages in Bishnupur district bordering Churachandpur district.

In one of the attacks at Chadonpokpi Bazar under Kumbi police station of Bishnupur district, a youth sustained bullet injuries on his belly, the reports further said.

The injured youth was identified as Naorem Thoiba Singh and he has been rushed to a hospital in Imphal.

The reports also said that Thoiba sustained bullet injuries after the militants opened fire to a group of youths of the village guarding the village with suspected militants on top of the hill nearby.

The reports further said that after setting fire to around 200 houses at Napat and its neighbouring Tangjeng village, the militants took control of the abandoned villages.

They have stationed in the villages by erecting temporary bankers, the reports added.
