Ukhrul: The dilapidated road condition caused by incessant rainfall in Ukhrul district has hugely disrupted vehicular movement plying along the National Highway-202 on Friday.

Several vehicles, including passenger wingers and two buses were stranded for more than two hours after a sand loaded truck got stuck right in the middle of the road. The fully loaded truck nearly slipped to the gorge while trying to climb up the uphill near New Heaven.

“It would have been a serious accident if the truck fell off from the road since there are several paddy fields and a brick field beneath the highway,” said a passenger.

After several attempts for hours with the help of one JCB, the stranded truck finally managed to move out easing vehicles stranded for at least two hours to cross the road.

Earlier in June, due to bad road condition along the two lane under construction NH-202 which began in 2020, two trucks reportedly broke down and remained stationed at Mahadeva area while several trucks coming from Ukhrul were stuck at Gwaltabi area near Yaingangpokpi village. Traffic movement along the route were diverted at two points namely Ramva (Lambui) area and Thoyee junction.

It may be noted that the NH-202 has become one of the lifelines in Manipur after the ethnic conflict which erupted on May 3.

Union minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari in April 2023 said the Centre government aims to complete the construction of National Highway-202, Imphal-Ukhrul road by May, 2024.
