The State government of Meghalaya has increased the number of testing labs and quarantine centres, to combat the community spread and the rapid surge of COVID-19 cases.

“We are reviewing every alternate day, we are very much concerned and have taken the decision to increase the quarantine centre, testing labs in the State,” said Health Minister, A. L. Hek.

RTPCR testing facilities are being installed in Shillong Civil Hospital, Nazareth hospital, Robert Hospital and other identified places, he informed.

Stating that there are a good number of testing labs under installation and the State government can do more testing and that people will not have to wait for long hours or days now, informed Hek. “Faster testing will make a difference,” he said.

On random testing, the Health Minister said that focus is laid on vulnerable areas and the testing is going on and depending on day to day situation and need, it will be carried out.

Asked about his reading of the current COVID situation, Hek said, “My assessment is that there is going to be an increase”.
