International Women’s Day Marked with One-day Sport Event in Chandel

CHANDEL: To mark the celebration of International Women’s Day, Mera Yuva Bharat Chandel, Khelo India ChandeL and the District Sports Association Chandel on Saturday organised a one-day sport event for girls and women at the District Sports Complex in Chandel on Saturday.

The event was also held with an aim to promote ASMITA, Achieving Sports Milestone by Inspiring Women Through Action. As part of the event, a 200-metre race was held in three categories – Under 13, 13-18 years of age and above 18 years of age.

In the Under 13 category, Changri Tongsin came first with Sutha Tongsin coming in second. The third place was shared between Jokyhring Tongsin and Adórii Tongsin. In the 13-18 years category, Wednahring Wanglum came first while Sonakshi Kumari and Decenty Tongsin came in second and third respectively. In the senior category, Thangpari Tongsin secured the first place, Thumnikham Seltun second and Piya Dilbung in the third.

All participants aged above 40 were presented with a certificate of appreciation while the winners were awarded with medals and certificates.

Earlier, during the opening ceremony, Db. Kowar Lamkang, president of All Manipur Football Association (AMFA) and a chief guest, encouraged the girls to take up sports for good physical health too. He said this was a historic day for the people of Chandel as there have been plans to encourage and support the women of the district on sports.

Citing the nine Manipur Footballers who will be representing India at AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026 campaign, he said the women of Chandel should take it as an example and be encouraged by it.

Welcoming the gathering, P. Rebecca Rangnamei, District Youth Officer, MYB Chandel informed that this year’s International Women’s Day theme is “Give to Gain”. Rangnamei said that the theme has made sense more than ever as it has given us a mindset of generosity and mindful collaboration towards women, the need to empower women in terms of education, leadership, politics, entrepreneurship, science and to invest in women in a very meaningful way.

She added that through this celebration, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports want to encourage to live a very active life, physically and contribute more to the development of a society. As part of the celebration, friendly volleyball matches were also held between different women teams and clubs.
