KAMJONG: In a major development to improving security in Indo-Myanmar border area, one company of Indian Reserve Battalion is reportedly set to be stationed at Choro village in Kamjong District. Sources stated that some personnel of the security forces have reached the area today.

This comes in the wake of the May 7 attack on the Indo-Myanmar border villages including Wanglee, Namlee, Choro, and Aloyo, and the recent Pilong killings.

According to the village chief of Z. Choro, around 25 IRB personnel have reached the area today following the village’s appeal to the government for security deployment. The development comes despite the presence of an Assam Rifles outpost near the village.

On May 7, several houses in the border villages of Wanglee, Namlee, Choro and Aloyo were reportedly burnt down by suspected Kuki militants. Vehicles, motorcycles and other valuables were also allegedly looted during the attack.

Following the incident, state home minister Govindas Konthoujam, along with several MLAs, visited the affected border villages to take stock of the situation.

Meanwhile, the Choro village chief expressed concern over the lack of compensation for houses destroyed in the May 7 attack. He stated that around 24 houses were burnt down in the incident, but the affected villagers have yet to receive compensation from the government.

He reported that so far the government’s assistance is limited to 156 sheets of tin roofing for temporary shelter and some food items. While the government had assured compensation for the affected families, the village chief appealed to the authorities to expedite the process. He further stated that owing to the prevailing security situation, only a few villagers are residing in the village.
