Imphal: A large number of people on Friday prevented Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh from going to meet Governor Anusuiya Uikey at Raj Bhavan, Imphal, amid speculation of the chief minister tendering his resignation from his post.
The chief minister was slated to meet the Governor today. Earlier, he reportedly planned to meet the Governor at 10 am which was postponed to 1 pm. It was further postponed to 3 pm.
As his proposed meeting with the Governor came amid the reports appeared in some sections of media that N Biren Singh was likely to resign as chief minister today (June 30), a large number of people from various parts of Imphal and its outskirts assembled on the road stretch from the chief minister secretariat to the Raj Bhavan which is a 100-meter stretch.
They filled the road in a bid to prevent the chief minister from going to meet the Governor.
Amid the chaotic situation on the road with security forces including RAF remaining as spectators, the chief minister accompanied by some ministers, MLAs and leaders of the BJP came out of his official bungalow.

When his cavalcade tried to move towards Raj Bhavan, the crowd, mostly women, encircled his car and forced him to return.
While blocking the road, the crowd shouted that it was not time for N Biren Singh to tender resignation. His resignation would pave the way from imposition of President’s Rule in the state.
Biren Singh was forced to go back to his bungalow after which some ministers and MLAs tried to convince the gathering crowd.

The crowd calmed down only after CAF and PD minister, L Susindro took out the resignation letter signed by the chief minister before the crowd. The supporters of the chief minister reportedly tore his resignation letter.
Later, the crowd shouted slogans hailing the chief minister and his cabinet colleagues for listening to the voices of the people.
Talking to the gathering crowd, minister L Susindro appealed to the people to work together for restoration of peace and normalcy in the state.
