Ukhrul: A Joint Action Committee (JAC) has called for immediate justice following an incident at Maram Ramlung, where a Mao student from Don Bosco College, Maram was allegedly molested, sexually assaulted, and harassed by one Kangba Moses, a married resident of Maram Ramlung Village. The perpetrator is currently absconding, and no arrests have been made by the authorities.

According to JAC Convenor, the incident took place just a few meters away from the college premises. The JAC, in coordination with local leaders and youth stated it has vowed to take appropriate action to ensure justice for the victim. The committee has expressed frustration over the lack of response from both the college authorities and local civil society organizations (CSOs).

The victim, who was preparing for her 6th semester exams, as per the JAC, was attacked around 7 p.m. when the assailant forcibly entered her room, locked it from the inside, and assaulted her. Despite her attempts to shout and resist, the assailant gagged her. She eventually managed to escape his grip and called for help, leading to her rescue by neighbors and the house owner.

The JAC has described the incident as an attempted rape and murder, questioning how such an atrocity could occur at one of the district’s most reputed educational institutions. The committee criticized the complacency and inaction of the college authorities and local CSOs, which has led the victim’s relatives and villagers to form the JAC.

In response, the JAC announced a lightning blockade on the national highway, effective immediately, until the culprit is handed over to them.

Meanwhile, the Mao Students’ Union (MSU) has condemned in the strongest terms what is stated as an “inhumane and unthinkable act by Mr. Kamba Moses of Maram Khullen village, who on the intervening night of May 17, 2024, attempted rape on one of our Union members by forcefully intruding into her room at around 7pm.”

In a statement issued on Saturday, MSU stated that such a ghastly and abominable act causes an inerasable blot and has no place in any sane and civilized society. MSU also appeals to every right-thinking individual and society to abhor the satanic act and urged the law enforcement agency to leave no stone unturned in booking the culprit and awarding the stringent exemplary punishment so that such an act is unheard of in our land once and for all.
