Kidnapped by criminals in Imphal, Tamreingam safely rescued by police; ZKL condemns

The Zingsho Katamnao Long, an apex organisation of the Eastern Tangkhul students has vehemently condemned the kidnapping of Tamreingam Shithung (19), a student of 2nd Semester, Geography Department of Liberal College, Luwangsangbam, Koirengei.

In a strongly worded press release issued on Tuesday, ZKL stated it has taken a serious exception to the kidnapping episode elucidating that Tamreingam is a bonafide resident of Bungpa Khullen village, Kamjong Sub-Division, Kamjong District, Manipur and presently residing at Dewlahland, Imphal.

ZKL stated that “Tamreingam Shithung, while on his way along with his friend to apply for scholarship, was abducted by two unidentified miscreants in Olive Green uniform and dragged into an A-Star car. The incident happened at around 12 noon on January 29, 2024, Monday near the Pukhri, Mother Teresa Charity Home, Mantripukhri. He was safely rescued by a team of Police at about 9 pm yesterday.”

The Tangkhul Students’ body further said, “In times of volatile ethnic violence raging the State of Manipur since last year, the kidnapping of innocent student and demanding a ransom, which is totally uncalled for, can further ignite unnecessary tension and flare-up between the peaceful communities. Therefore, the incident as such deserves a condemnation from all sections of the communities.”

Urging the State authorities to step up necessary measures to put in place the law and order situation across the capital city, which has been witnessing a rise in crimes against the innocent civilians, ZKL also appealed to the people in the State of Manipur to refrain from such unlawful activities, while it warned that it will be constrained to take stringent action in case such incident is repeated in the future.

Manipur Police said that Tamreingam Shithung was abducted by criminals from Mantripukhri in Imphal but was safely rescued by the Police. “Swiftly responding to the incident, Manipur Police initiated a comprehensive effort, successfully rescuing him from the Kangchup Area of Imphal West,” Manipur Police wrote on X.
