Ukhrul, October 2: The Kuki Liberation Army-Letkholun (KLA-L), has called for full self-governance in the resettlement of internally displaced persons (IDPs) among the Kuki-Zo community.
In a press communique, the KLA-L emphasized that any plan or policy undermining their capacity to manage their own people will face resolute opposition. The statement specifically criticized the Government’s proposal to close relief camps by December 2025 without meaningful engagement with the Kuki-Zo community, labeling it “unacceptable.”

According to the communique, a viable resettlement plan must be “conceptualized and executed by the Kuki-Zo, for the Kuki-Zo,” with full agency over resource allocation and utilization. The KLA-L urged the Government to step back, provide the necessary support and resources, and allow the community to manage its own affairs without interference.
“Our people’s dignity and well-being are non-negotiable. The era of paternalistic governance is over. We are capable and willing to ensure the successful resettlement of all Kuki-Zo’s IDPs. Leave us alone,” the statement read.
The Kuki-Zo organization further highlighted that a separate administration is essential for the safe and dignified return of IDPs. The communique warned that without a distinct administrative framework, the resettlement process will be “fraught with risks and uncertainties.”

The KLA-L stressed that the establishment of a separate administration is not a matter of preference but a necessity to ensure protection and welfare. The Government must take concrete steps to grant the Kuki-Zo the autonomy and administrative framework necessary for the community’s well-being.
