Churachandpur, Jan 7: In a press release issued today, the Kuki-Zo Council, the highest political body for the Kuki-Zo community, shared details of a meeting with Ajay Kumar Bhalla, the newly appointed Governor of Manipur. The meeting took place at the Deputy Commissioner’s Conference Hall in Churachandpur on January 7, 2025, during the Governor’s first visit to the district after assuming office.

The Kuki-Zo Council congratulated Governor Bhalla on his appointment and expressed appreciation to the Government of India for selecting a senior officer for the position. The Council also used the opportunity to highlight several key issues affecting the Kuki-Zo community, presenting a written memorandum to the Governor.

As per the press release, the Council submitted a written memo raising important issues, including the preservation of Buffer Zones, the re-demarcation of District Police Jurisdiction, and the deployment of Neutral Central Security Forces.

In his response, Governor Bhalla underscored the importance of prioritizing peace before pursuing political solutions. However, the Council strongly asserted that political negotiations with the Suspension of Operation (SoO) groups should be expedited. The Council reiterated its demand for a Separate Administration—a Union Territory with a legislature for the Kuki-Zo people—under Article 239(A) of the Indian Constitution, believing this to be essential for achieving lasting peace.

According to the press release, Governor Bhalla assured the Council that the Central Government would remain neutral in maintaining law and order. In response to this, the Council assured that peace would remain secure only if the sanctity of the Buffer Zones was respected.

The press release concluded with the Council’s gratitude toward the District Administration of Churachandpur for facilitating the first meeting with the Governor in his first visit to the district after assuming office as the Governor of Manipur.
