Kohima, June 10: A landslide triggered by continuous rainfall between June 1-4, 2025 has severely damaged a 50-meter stretch of National Highway 2 between Phesama and Kisama, Nagaland, disrupting traffic flow along the vital route connecting Nagaland and Manipur.
The affected section, rendered completely impassable, is now bypassed by a temporary diversion road above the landslide zone. The route, however, can only accommodate light vehicles such as passenger cars and mini trucks. Larger trucks remain barred, posing challenges for transportation of goods and supplies.

Travelers approaching from the Imphal side can access Kohima by using an alternate route via the Kisama Heritage Site, popularly known for hosting the Hornbill Festival. The one-way road ascends through the Rhododendron Garden and reconnects with the highway just before the Phesama petrol pump.
Deputy Chief Minister T.R. Zeliang, who visited the site for an inspection, underlined the urgent need for a long-term, sustainable solution. “This is the third major road collapse at the same location since 2013,” he stated, adding that both he and Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio are actively pursuing measures to address the recurring issue.

Local MLAs Kevipodi Sophie and Losii Dikho also visited the site to assess the damage. Sophie termed the situation “very unfortunate,” while Dikho assured that efforts are underway to establish a temporary lifeline for Manipur until full restoration of NH-2 is achieved.
Authorities have urged commuters to exercise caution and remain updated on traffic advisories as repair work continues.
