Tripura Opposition Leader Questions ED Raids, Says Real Culprits Remain Untouched

Published on

Agartala: Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in Tripura Legislative Assembly and CPI(M) state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury has acknowledged the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) role in conducting raids against lawbreakers in Tripura, but he raised critical questions about the agency’s focus, suggesting that it is targeting the wrong individuals while ignoring those truly responsible for the state’s growing lawlessness.

Chaudhury stated that while the ED’s duty to act against money launderers and criminals is important, he believes that the raids should be more comprehensive. “If the ED is raiding those involved in illegal activities like drug trafficking and financial irregularities, that’s understandable. However, the issue is that the people being raided are mostly connected to the ruling party,” he said.

He pointed out that many of those raided had past associations with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), having held positions as booth presidents and Mandal Leaders, and were allegedly involved in activities such as drug and liquor trafficking. “These individuals have strong ties to the ruling party, so I ask—why only these few people? The real beneficiaries of the state’s lawlessness are the party’s leaders,” Chaudhury remarked.

Chaudhury expressed concern that the ED’s focus on these individuals does not address the root causes of the issues. “Why hasn’t the ED targeted the real culprits? This points to a deeper problem—Tripura’s economic discipline and rule of law have broken down,” he said.

While supporting the ED’s efforts, Chaudhury stressed the need for more targeted raids. “As a citizen, I welcome the ED’s efforts, but the real culprits should not be allowed to escape. The main offenders have yet to be touched,” he concluded.
