Manipur: 54 MPCC members eligible to vote today to elect AICC president

Imphal: Altogether 54 members of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) are eligible to cast vote in the election for the All India Congress Committee (AICC)’s president.

The election in which two candidates – Mallikarjun Kharge and Shashi Tharoor – are in the fray will be held across the country on October 17 today.

The voting in respect of Manipur state will take place at Congress Bhavan in Imphal from 10 am to 4 pm as in other states.

The MPCC is all set to hold the election in a free and fair manner, said assistant returning officer in-charge of AICC for Manipur Iftkhar Ahmed here.

Addressing a press conference, Ahmed said that all necessary arrangements for holding the elections in the state were completed and the voting would be allowed from 10 am till 4 pm on Monday.

Actually, there would be 60 voters (one each from every Assembly constituency of the state) for the election. However, only 54 are eligible for casting the vote, he said.

It is due to some members of the MPCC leaving their memberships during the membership drive of the party conducted ahead of the AICC presidential elections, he clarified.

The election authority of the party is all set to conduct voting in a fair manner, said the assistant returning officer who claimed that Congress is the only party in the country that maintains internal democracy.

“No other national party conducts a party’s presidential election like the AICC, ” he claimed.

Informing that the voting will be done through secret ballot papers, he said that the voters must carry their identity cards issued by the Central Election Authority of AICC while turning up to cast their votes.

After completion of the voting, the ballot box will be shielded and packed for onward sending to New Delhi where the counting will be done along with ballot boxes from across the country.

The counting of votes will be done in New Delhi on October 19 and the results are expected on the same day, he added.

Saying that the Congress always considered maintaining internal democracy very seriously, he said that keeping this in mind, the party is putting all effort to hold the election in a very fair and transparent manner.
