Imphal: Manipur Legislative Assembly reaffirmed its resolution passed on August 5, 2022 with regards to implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur on Friday, during its 3rd Sitting of the ongoing 5th Session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly.
Moving the private members’ resolution reaffirming the assembly’s previous resolution and also to urge the Government of India to implement NRC in Manipur in the interest of the state and of the Nation in general, Phungyar MLA Leishiyo Keishing stressed the threats posed by influx of illegal immigrants not only in Manipur but also in other North East States.

He asserted that implementation of NRC is the solution to identify illegal immigrants and indigenous people. MLA Leishiyo also highlighted the benefits of implementing NRC to ensure that rightful citizens get the benefit of various government welfare schemes.
He opined that prevailing Manipur crisis could have been averted if such mechanism was in place earlier and expressed his firm belief that implementation of NRC will be a long lasting measure against any similar unwanted incidents in future.

Announcing the Assembly’s reaffirmation, Chief Minister Nongthombam posted on X “Today, the Manipur Legislative Assembly took a significant step by reaffirming our resolution passed on August 5, 2022. It is our firm belief that the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur is crucial for safeguarding the interests of our state and contributing to the greater good of our nation. The decision to urge the Government of India to expedite the implementation of the NRC reflects our commitment to ensuring the security and integrity of Manipur. I urge all citizens to support this endeavor as we strive to build a stronger, more prosperous Manipur for generations to come”.

The house also unanimously passed two Manipur Appropriation bills and introduced five new bills. The new bills are “Manipur Names of Places Bill, 2024’, ‘Manipur Goods and Services tax (Sixth Amendment) Bill 2024”, “Manipur Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management (Fifth Amendment) Bill 2024”, “Manipur Prevention of Malpractice in High School Leaving Certificate and Higher Secondary Examinations Bill 2024” and “Manipur Municipalities (11th Amendment) Bill 2024”.
