Manipur CM N Biren & Director General BRO discuss progress on Indo-Myanmar border fence projects

Imphal: Additional director general of Border Roads Organisation (East), PKH Singh on Monday called on Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh and discussed the progress of fencing work along the Manipur sector of the Indo-Myanmar border among other roadway development projects being taken up in the border areas.

During the discussion, the additional director general tabled a detailed account of the progress of development and roadway construction especially border fencing works in the border areas of the state, an official source said.

He also briefed the chief minister on the progress of border fencing being taken up by Border Roads (East) in the southeastern part of the state, officials said.

The discussion was a fruitful one, chief minister N Biren Singh wrote on Facebook.

“Had a fruitful discussion about the progress of development and roadway construction in the state for improved connectivity and overall growth in various sectors. Also, pleased to learn about the progress of the ongoing fencing activity at the border areas to protect the state from various forms of external threats,” Biren wrote.

India shares a 1643-km-long border with Myanmar and Manipur alone shares around 398 km of the porous border with Myanmar.

The BRO is currently engaged in border fencing work from BP 79 to BP 81 covering a distance of 10 km from Moreh to Kwatha in Tengnoupal district.

The centre had taken up works to erect border fencing on another 70 km stretch of the border. Sources said that the groundwork for fencing erection had already commenced.

With the approval of the Ministry of Home Affairs, 34 police outposts have been set up in the border area of Manipur to check infiltration from the neighbouring country Myanmar.
